    Synopsis

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse.

    Biography

The winner of the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature, Ernest Hemingway is one of the true giants of modern American literature. Hemingway's punchy, pared-down style and ability to zero in on the perfect characterizing detail of a person or scene has influenced every serious novelist of the second half of the 20th century. Everyone reads him at one time or another.

November 16, 2009: I truly sad love story about the realities of war. Great characters, entertaining store line, different writing style then today's books and an unexpected ending. I can't wait to pick up my next Hemingway book.

September 09, 2009: A farewell to arms is story that talks about a man named Frederick Henry. He was an ambulance driver for the Italian army. Hemingway describes the difficulties of going to the war and as well as going through it. the romance that occurs between Frederick Henry and Catherine Barkley are challenged through out the book because of the war. In my opinion the A Farewell to Arms is a good to read. Hemingway goes straight to the point when something needs to be said. For example in one part of the story Frederick is being told that he is going to be arrested the next day, the characters don't go on and on talking. Many things happen in a very short period. Hemingway does not go around the bushes in that sense. Although, the story at some points lacked detail to explain why Frederick did the things he did as well as the other characters. The romance between Frederick and Catherine was good. They always tried to show their affection every chance they had since they could not do so in front of any people. The story was very realistic in the way that the soldiers acted and how their lives were written. It wasn't just being the hero like most war stereotypes. The men die and even go through problems within the war to say the least. The book was also pretty thorough in the explanation of how some of the men were dying. The books ending was good but not great I think that it could have had more explanation to Fredericks concluding actions. Either way the book was still very good to read.
