    Synopsis

In 1866 tragedy strikes at the exclusive Windfield School when a mysterious accident takes the life of a student. Among the student's circle of friends are Hugh Pilaster; Hugh's older cousin Edward, dissolute heir to the Pilaster banking fortune; and Micky Miranda, the handsome son of a brutal South American oligarchy. The death and its aftermath begin the spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives.

From the exclusive men's clubs that cater to every dark desire of England's upper classes to the luxurious ballrooms of the manipulators of the world's wealth, Follett conjures up a stunning panorama of intrigue. A Dangerous Fortune brings us characters swept toward a perilous climax where greed, fed by the shocking truth of a young man's death, must be stopped - or the dreams of a nation will die.

    Annotation

In 1866, a mysterious drowning at the exclusive Windfield School for boys initiates a spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives. A spectacular New York Times bestseller.

    Bill Kent

Like The Pillars of the Earth, Mr. Follett's intricate saga about the construction of a medieval cathedral, A Dangerous Fortune reads more like an exercise in which the author applies the conventions of the plot-driven thriller to the historical novel. He delivers a silly, good-time read that for all its giddy leaps and bounds shows us little about the Victorians and the vital era they inhabited. -- New York Times

Known around the world for his string of smash-hit spy thrillers touched off by 1978’s Eye of the Needle, Ken Follett’s taut tales -- spiked with more than a dash of sex appeal -- have earned this author (and sometime blues guitarist) a reputation as a master of international intrigue.

March 28, 2008: Ken Follett is probably one of the most accomplished writers around today. A DANGEROUS FORTUNE might be classed as one of his best pieces. I certainly found it entertaining and can thoroughly recommend it.

November 27, 2002: Dangerous Fortune is a great story with interacting plots and three dimensional characters, both villains and heroes. This is one of those "can't put it down" books.
