    Synopsis

The vampire Count Saint-Germain, disguised as a missing Hungarian nobleman, is on a spy mission in the heart of Czarist Russia. Almost by the power of his will alone, it seems, Peter the Great is wrestling the city that will one day be St. Petersburg out of swampland. Representatives of the heads of all European states are living in tiny, frigid, wooden homes as they jockey for power and influence over the Czar. When a man shows up claiming to be the Count Saint-Germain, the vampire must figure out how to protect his title and wealth without revealing either his true identity or his True Nature.

    Publishers Weekly

Rich with historical detail and intrigue, Yarbro's 21st Count Saint-Germain novel (after 2007's Borne in Blood) unfolds in 18th-century Russia at the height of Peter the Great's effort to wrest St. Petersburg from the swamps and spearhead the modernizing of his nation. Benevolent vampire Saint-Germain plays both sides, contributing engineering suggestions to the czar's efforts and intelligence reports to the Polish monarchy. As usual, several difficulties threaten to expose his secret identity, and he battles ignorant and superstitious opposition to his enlightened teaching and doctoring skills. Though sluggishly paced in spots and minimally supernatural, this meticulously researched entry deftly displays Yarbro's ambitions to use her vampire hero as a lens to focus on the best and worst of human behavior throughout history. A Dangerous Climate -- Only for the Readersby Books_Are_Sanity

December 14, 2008: Having read many of the Saint-Germain novels, I began this book with mixed feelings. Would it be as exciting and vivid as "Blood Games" and "Tempting Fate" or would it be flat and sluggish as "Come Twilight" and "Better in the Dark"? Unfortunately, it was the latter. The characters were lackluster, including the usually intense Saint-Germain. The plot was a mere thread, sometimes so thin as to be transparent. Even the inter-chapter letters, which, in other novels, added to the knowledge of the reader without having to add to the narration, were tedious. The motivations of the characters were under-developed even when those motivations were mentioned. In short, I felt this book was one long conversation, the participants of which changed as the locations changed. I never "saw" the characters clearly, never was intrigued by the little action that took place, and was disappointed by the blandness of the usually vibrant main character. It was like watching a play through a fog bank. Only one aspect of the book was in keeping with the character of Saint Germain: the intense sensuality of his "feeding". This alone has the richness of description and emotion that I had come to associate with all aspects of Ms. Yabro's best Saint Germain stories. I can't recommend this book to any one who has enjoyed the other novels.

August 08, 2008: In 1704 vampire Count Saint-Germain is in Saint Petersburg, which is being built by Russian laborers under the direction of elite European specialists. Saint-Germain directs the construction of machinery to drain the marshes so that building can commence. He is to observe and report all that is going on in the city to the King of Poland. ---------------- Saint-Germain is pretending to be the missing Arpad Arco-Tolvay. Zozia, who is the real Arpad?s wife, pretends to be a married to Saint-Germain so as a couple they can fit in easier with the horde of other foreign nationals flooding the construction site. She has her own orders from Poland?s king to carry out. They are there less than a week when Saint-Germain is attacked and left for dead. A second assault affirms what he already knew that someone wants him dead, but he has no idea as to who or why as he has not been around long enough to have made enemies. More troubles follow when Lajos Rogoczi arrives insisting that Saint-Germain is dead and as such he owns the properties in Russia. Saint-Germain has to prove Lajos is a lying imposter without giving away his identity.---------- Reading about Saint Petersburg being built on top of a swamp is fascinating as politicians and their retinue arrives allegedly as a display of diplomatic support to the Tsar, but in actuality to spy on the Russians and one another. Saint-Germain is his usual urbane self even when he allows Zozia to order him around. A DANGEROUS CLIMATE is Chelsea Quinn Yarbro at her outstanding best as the thirty-seven hundred years old vampire, star of a zillion novels, is caught in quite a conundrum.---------- Harriet Klausner
