    Synopsis

For a divorced mother of two, it was a fairy-tale romance?

When lovely Jenny MacPartland met the man of her dreams while working in a New York art gallery, she could hardly believe her luck. Artist Erich Krueger was handsome, sensitive, a painter whose exquisite landscapes were making him a virtual overnight success...

    Annotation

Jenny MacPartland was a charming, divorced mother of two working at a New York art gallery when she was suddenly whisked away into a life of luxury by wealthy artist Eric Krueger. But a chain of shattering events reveal a link to a past more terrifying than she dared imagine. Reissue.

...As in all of Mary Higgins Clark's tales of horror, things soon begin to go slightly, then massively, awry....The plot appears to have been put together out of generous borrowings from many familiar sources, ''Psycho,'' ''Gaslight,'' ''Rebecca,'' ''Jane Eyre,'' among others....Suspense builds as the story sweeps rapidly along, and in spite of my sense of deja vu, I was kept guessing for far longer than I care to admit....While ''A Cry in the Night'' is not on a par with Mrs. Clark's previous efforts, it has its own virtues. It is a good harrowing tale by a master of horror fiction who seldom disappoints her readers. -- New York Times

    Biography

Mary Higgins Clark likes to delve into different worlds in her crackerjack novels of suspense; but while the milieus change, her stories are always compelling. As she puts it: "I write about people going about their daily lives, not looking for trouble, who are suddenly plunged into menacing situations."

My Favorite Mary Higgins Clark, ABSLOUTELY THRILLING...by Scarlett_Grace

August 01, 2009: This was the first book I ever read of Mary Higgins Clark, the book that started my collection of hers, now running at 17. If you haven`t read any of her books, this is the one you should start with. Reminiscent of Psycho, this book captivates everything that defines disturbing. Through Mary Higgins Clark`s amazing storytelling we are introduced to Jenny MacPartland, a divorced woman with two children, trying to juggle the demands of motherhood and the pathetic excuses of her ex. And then she meets Erich Krueger, a wealthy handsome painter who falls in love with her, and she with him. Within a month, they marry, and Jenny finds herself in the perfect marriage, until things start to go terribly wrong and horrifying events occur that make Jenny doubt everything around her. And she learns of a past more terrifying then all, something that makes her doubts reality and that jeopardizes her life as she knows it. I give this book five stars, but it deserves far more. A must read.

January 08, 2009: I couldn't tear myself away from this book! I really enjoy Mary Higgins Clark and this is the best one I've read yet! I'm never disappointed. All the characters have a piece of the puzzle and you still can't fit them together until the end! Great book. Will read again!
