    Synopsis

In the tradition of The Alienist, this remarkable debut novel by David Liss is a beguiling depiction of the origins of today's financial markets. A Conspiracy of Paper is the story of Benjamin Weaver, an outsider in 18th-century London: a Jew among Christians, a ruffian among aristocrats, a retired pugilist now tracking down debtors and thieves. While investigating the mysterious death of his estranged father, Weaver uncovers the beginnings of a strange new economic order based on stock speculation. Read Chapter One of A Conspiracy of Paper below, and don't miss our upcoming chat with newcomer David Liss.

    Annotation

Winner of the 2001 Edgar Award for Best First Novel.

    Denver Post - Robin Vidimos

A Conspiracy of Paper is a magical carpet ride of a book, transporting readers into the hurly-burly streets of 18th-century London. David Liss metamorphoses fastidious research into a novel chock full of historical detail that fascinates as it entertains. It's a rich read that never drags....It is a work that any novelist would be proud to acknowledge and, consider that it is a first novel, a particularly impressive display of talent.

June 25, 2007: The title of the book I am writing a review on is a conspiracy of paper. The author of this fiction mystery is David Liss. This book targets an audience that likes a good mystery. David Liss is showing in this book that while writing you can still keep the attention of your audience by exciting word and informative scene writing. Compared to many mystery books David Liss gives detail by detail of the scene and what is going on. In conclusion the mystery in this story was just that a mystery. David Liss has a wonderful way of putting you into the crime scene and making you feel as if you are apart of the mystery solving process. I really enjoyed following this murder mystery and give this book 41/2 water droplet.
