    Synopsis

While Peter is away from the island, James and the other Lost Boys discover a mysterious cave. Shining Pearl and her sister, Little Scallop, warn the boys that the cave is a dangerous place, inhabited by a creature known as the Goat Taker - a beast so scary that even the Mollusk tribe fears it. But the boys can't resist trying to discover the cave's secrets. When the first of those secrets turns out to be a tantalizing hint of a famous haunted treasure, Captain Hook and his band of cutthroat pirates quickly join the hunt. Before long, the children are fleeing for their lives in a dark and deadly underground labyrinth . . . and their only hope of escape is to solve the mystery of the Cave of the Dark Wind.

    Children's Literature

A takeoff of the Peter Pan tale, this latest installment in the "Never Land" series finds the lost boys having an adventure of their own while Peter is away. The lost boys are living on Mollusk Island which has a mysterious cave that supposedly harbors both the dreadful Goat-Taker and a fabulous treasure. The boys decide to go into the Cave of the Dark Wind and enlist two girls of the Mollusk tribe to act as guides. Of course, Hook and his pirates are also on the island and also want the treasure. They follow the lost boys into the cave which leads to a wild chase in which the treasure is found and lost again, the mystery of the Goat-Taker is solved, and the boys, naturally, elude Hook and make a fool of him. The dialogue between Hook and his pirates is often quite humorous and reads like an Abbott and Costello comedy skit. Names of the characters are often descriptive of their characteristics, such as Shining Pearl, Pesky Lee, and Tubby Ted. Reviewer: Sheryl O'Sullivan
