    Synopsis

In search of clues to the mystery of her father's death, 16-year-old Sally Lockhart ventures into the shadowy underworld of Victorian London. Pursued by villains at every turn, the intrepid Sally finally uncovers two dark mysteries--and realizes that she herself is the key to both.

"In Dickensian fashion, Pullman tells the story of 16-year-old Sally Lockhart, who becomes involved in a deadly web of events as she searches for a mysterious ruby. The novel is a page turner, peopled with despicable hags, forthright heroes, and children living on the underbelly of 19th-century London. The story's events are exciting, with involved plotting. Settings and characterizations are exquisitely drawn. The first entry in a planned trilogy."--(starred) Booklist. Reading level: 6.7.

In 1872 London, sixteen years old Sally Lockhart lives with her scornful Aunt Caroline Rees following the death of her father at sea. However when she receives a note that appears to have been sent by her dad, she visits her late father’s former business partner Selby to learn who Mr. Marchands is and what is the Seven Blessings included in the enigmatic message. Office assistant Jim Taylor escorts her to secretary Mr. Higgs. Her mentioning of the Seven Blessings leads to Higgs suddenly dying from a heart attack.--------------------- When she receives a note from Mr. Marchands warning her to beware of the old witch, she goes to visit him. He tells her he cannot help her, but provides her with a journal from when her mother was murdered sixteen years ago in India. She avoids the witch who happens to be visiting Marchands and meets young artist Frederick Garland. She returns by train to London, but falling asleep the journal is stolen except for the last few pages that fell out. Her adventures are just beginning but she has allies in Jim, Frederick and his actress sister Rosa even as the witch Mrs. Holland arranges to have her murdered as she did Mr. Marchands.--------------- This is a reprint of an entertaining Victorian young adult thriller starring a wonderful teenage heroine in peril and a strong support cast either willing to help her or hurt her. The story line is fast-paced from the onset as Sally just wants to know what her father’s cryptic note means and never slows down as each innocent step she takes leads to trouble. In some ways in just a few scenes the vile villainess Mrs. Holland steals the show as her plotting is diabolically brilliant just ask the journal thief. With a strong stance towards equality and bringing Madison Avenue marketing to Victorian London, fans will enjoy THE RUBY IN THE SMOKE, the first of the Sally Lockhart mysteries.--------------- Harriet Klausner

A Sally Lockhart Mystery The Ruby in the Smoke is one of Philip Pullman’s greatest books. He wrote many wonderful Sally Lockhart mysteries like The Shadow in the North, The Tiger in the Well, and The Tin Princess. He is a very special person and a very wonderful writer. If you like his other books you will love this one. In this book The Ruby in the Smoke, Sally Lockhart is left without parents after her father died. Sally now must find what her father left her when he passed away. Sally has a long journey before she will know the truth about her father and his partners. This book is two mysteries into one. The first mystery sally must figure out is what her father left her and why did he choose to give it to her. Sally journeys too many different places in search of answers about what her father left her. Sally starts reading letters sent by her father’s partners and these letters lead her to many different people. Some are there to help and some are there to kill. Philip Pullman fully describes many people in this book that will help Sally, but he also describes one horrible lady that will kill to find what Sally father has left her. As a reader, one can only hate this woman and what she has done to Sally and many others. Also, you can only want to help Sally figure out all of this and be free. The second mystery Sally must solve is why this horrible lady is after her. Sally does not know what her father left her and she now does not know why this frightening woman wants what her father left her. Philip Pullman reveals this other mystery that forces Sally to buy a gun so she can defend and protect herself from this awful lady. Never once does Philip Pullman relieve this pressure of being killed off of Sally which makes this very overwhelming for her, and also for the readers because you feel it too. Sally journeys to many places and every stop is different and she does not know what to do or how to act. Philip Pullman brings us on her journeys and fills us in on her discovers along the way. Every place seems to have different people that give her new information about her father that she never knew before. Anyone who is interested to read the first book of a trilogy and wondering what will happen to Sally Lockhart should read this book. This is a very magnificent mystery book. You will not only get one mystery, but you get two in one. Now you must try to solve the mystery along with Sally in this wonderful book. Anyone who likes a twisted story that will not stop getting even more twisted will love this story. Philip Pullman writes this great mystery and you will not want to put this book down ever until you are finished.
