Synopsis

"Special Circumstances":

The words have sent chills down Tally's spine since her days as a repellent, rebellious ugly. Back then Specials were a sinister rumor -- frighteningly beautiful, dangerously strong, breathtakingly fast. Ordinary pretties might live their whole lives without meeting a Special. But Tally's never been ordinary.

And now she's been turned into one of them: a superamped fighting machine, engineered to keep the uglies down and the pretties stupid.

The strength, the speed, and the clarity and focus of her thinking feel better than anything Tally can remember. Most of the time. One tiny corner of her heart still remembers something more.

Still, it's easy to tune that out -- until Tally's offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently. It all comes down to one last choice: listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat, or carry out the mission she's programmed to complete. Either way, Tally's world will never be the same.

Publishers Weekly

Bringing the Uglies trilogy to a close, Specials by Scott Westerfeld follows Tally Youngblood, first met in Uglies (which PW said "introduces thought-provoking issues"), as she is turned into a Special, a high-octane fighting machine, programmed to keep the uglies down and the pretties stupid. Can she listen to the small voice in her head or will she destroy New Smoke's residents? Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

November 28, 2008: I had seen Uglies so many times while passing the book aisle in Target. The cover AND the title caught my eye. I begged my parents to buy it for me. I went to the public library in the city I lived in and was roaming around and yet again that same book caught my eye and I had to get it! I did and it took me 3 days to finish while doing off-school HW. For those 3 days I had spent sooo much time in my room alone reading it, my parents began to worry. Funny, right? After I had finished the book I would tell everyone about the book and how amazing it was. I went straight to the library to find the sequel, Pretties. They did not have it. I bugged my parents so much for the Pretties and Specials books. But my dad told me to wait so many times I began to get impatient, it was around Christmas season of '07. And my parents knew just what to get me. Yes I did get the books, I was so excited that I almost started to cry. Immediately I began to read it. It was just as amazing and mind-blowing as Uglies and I enjoyed it very much. Specials was so action-packed and was so word-losing, that's how good it was. A must read for anyone at any age. You would totally love Tally-Wa!
