"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."
So begins the classic Rebecca, the unsurpassed modern masterpiece of romantic suspense -- one of the bestselling novels of all time! And so begins the remembrances of the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter, as she recalls the events that led her to the isolated gray stone manse on the windswept Cornish coast.
With a husband she barely knew, the young bride arrived at this immense estate, only to be inexorably drawn into the life of the first Mrs. de Winter, the beautiful Rebecca -- dead, but never forgotten; her suite of rooms never touched; her clothes still ready to be worn; and her servant, the sinister Mrs. Danvers, still royal.
And as an eerie presentiment of evil tightened around her heart, the second Mrs. de Winter began her search for the real fate of Rebecca -- and for the secrets of Manderley.
Published in 1938 Rebecca was a spectacular novel. It later became a fabulous movie starring Joan Fontaine and Lawerence Olivier. And now it is a breathtaking audiotape.
Ann Massey does justice to the frightened young bride and her enemy, the brooding housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, who raised Rebecca... How good is this audiotape? Well, even if you've read the book, seen the movie and know the dark secret that lies at the center of the plot, it still will chill and fascinate you. And for those who come to the audio innocent, well, use cation when driving.
More Reviews and RecommendationsThe Cornish coast had probably never seemed so ominous until Daphne du Maurier set her pen to it. Playing up the isolated, somewhat wild patches of the area she called home, du Maurier created gothic stories tinged by both romance and horror -- most famously with her tale of the ultimate nightmare ex-wife, Rebecca.

Hi, I first read this book when I was 13. Loved it, and read it a few more times by the time I was 40. Had not thought about it in a long time, but had a dream about it last night. Guess it is time to re-read it.....

Daphne DuMaurier has created a masterpiece. Rebecca is definetly a must-read for anyone-I started this book yesterday, and have not been able to put it out of my sight, much less put it down. DuMaurier leaves you hanging on every word-a real page turner. The mysterious Rebecca leaves you wanting more...who is she? Why does everyone compare the second Mrs. DeWinter to her? You can find out in Rebecca, by Daphne DuMaurier...
