Synopsis

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

Publishers Weekly

In this tantalizing SF thriller, planet-hopping parasites are inserting their silvery centipede selves into human brains, curing cancer, eliminating war and turning Earth into paradise. But some people want Earth back, warts and all, especially Melanie Stryder, who refuses to surrender, even after being captured in Chicago and becoming a host for a "soul" called Wanderer. Melanie uses her surviving brain cells to persuade Wanderer to help search for her loved ones in the Arizona desert. When the pair find Melanie's brother and her boyfriend in a hidden rebel cell led by her uncle, Wanderer is at first hated. Once the rebels accept Wanderer, whom they dub Wanda, Wanda's whole perspective on humanity changes. While the straightforward narrative is short on detail about the invasion and its stunning aftermath, it shines with romantic intrigue, especially when a love triangle (or quadrangle?!) develops for Wanda/Melanie. 10-city author tour. December 04, 2008: I really loved this book. Stephenie Meyer did an amazing job with her characters. The were so complex yet easy to understand and realate to. She also picked a topic that is very different from what I have ever read before. The begining is a little bit confusing but other then that it is awesome. Stephenie Meyer is an outstanding writer and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read a story with action, suspence, and a little bit of romance all in one.

November 30, 2008: (Continued review)
One problem which she keeps hidden from Wanderer is constantly at the back of Melanie?s mind. If and when they find Jared and Jamie, how will they prove that Melanie is still inside Wanderer?s head? Melanie knows full well after seeing friends and family taken over by the parasites, that the soul, once in the body, knows everything the host once did. Therefore she knows there is no way to prove she is still alive. In addition to a scar on the back of the neck from insertion, soul?s eyes have a silver reflection in the pupils when light is shown on them. Although these characteristics may come in handy when trying to deceive other souls, this fact may be a danger to both Wanderer and Melanie when they come upon other humans whose goal is to kill alien souls.
Throughout the novel, both girls must overcome their differences and help each other escape the brutalities of human nature and the never ending flight from their alien pursuers. The Host captures the overwhelming emotions that human beings experience daily as well as the choices we make that change our lives forever. This book is filled with romance, adventure, suspense, and an unlikely sisterly bond that captures its readers. This riveting story told to us by one of the finest young adult novelist, Stephenie Meyer, is one that once you start reading you can not put it down. With its compelling storyline and dangerously escalating suspense it is a must read.
