    Synopsis

Christianity on Trial challenges readers of all beliefs-even those with a belief in disbelief itself-to question the anti-religious bigotry that thrives in our intellectual world and to reevaluate the role of Christianity not only as a source of consolation but of enlightenment and human liberation as well.

August 07, 2008: Very relevant reading, especially considering how our society is growing ever-more biased against Christians and ignorant of the truth. This is a book of history, NOT politics. I have confirmed with many personal friends who are immigrants from China, India, and other lands, that Christians changed their countries for the better, and recalled that Christians are responsible for ending slavery in the Western world 'W. Wilberforce, A. Lincoln', leading the way for the rest of the world.

April 24, 2002: Honest Historians, secular and religious, need to give this book some serious attention. In our nation today, there is a serious attempt to marginalize our Judeo-Christian heritage and blame it for all the ills of modern society. Christianity on Trial illustrates how much good has been done by the Church in it's long history. I did not give the book a full five stars becuase the first couple of chapters are slow. Also, as a Medieval historian, I believe the history of the Crusades could have been more effectively covered. The blame for the Crusades rests largely on Islam. The Muslims continual invasion of Byzantine lands largely settled by Orthodox Christians and Jews alarmed the Byzantine Emperor so much that he sent a letter asking for aid to the Pope. Even that might not have been enough to set off the Crusades exept the Muslims made the additional mistake of closing Christian holy sites to pilgrims (at that time peaceful) from the west. I think these points should have been more strongly asserted by the authors but I understand that they might have been trying not to offend Muslims in the current political climate. Christians will take away a new view of our religion and a ready defense for those that would point fingers of blame at us for all the 'sins' of the white European. Non-Christians who are open-minded AND intellectually honest will hopefully be less inclined to disparrage it in the future.
